About MAO
The Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology is a professional association of ophthalmologists in Minnesota representing over 200 EyeMD’s throughout the state. With roots going back to 1910, the MAO was incorporated to encourage research in ophthalmology, benefit its members through education, and promote the services of ophthalmology to the public. Nearly 100 years later, the MAO sponsors eight scientific programs a year; acts as a resource for socioeconomic, legislative, and regulatory affairs pertaining to ophthalmic care in Minnesota; provides a state wide communications network; and, sponsors multiple free vision screening services to the public.
The Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology is a non-profit organization formed in 1911 for the encouragement and cultivation of the study of, and research in, the branch of medical science known as "ophthalmology."
Ophthalmologists (Eye M.D.'s) are medical doctors who specialize in eye and vision care. In diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, ophthalmologists provide comprehensive eye exams, prescribe corrective lenses, prescribe and administer medicines, and perform surgery.

The MAO maintains several on-going programs designed:
- to help insure that Minnesota citizens have easy access to the best eye health care medical science can provide
- to articulate that ophthalmologists are the only medical school-trained primary eye care practitioners, providing for every ophthalmological need for Minnesota families at fair professional fees
- to promote a public service plan to educate the citizens in self-care practices that will help ensure a healthy life style.
The MAO provides its members with opportunities to maintain and upgrade their ophthalmic skills and knowledge through regular continuing medical education and scientific programs. Current membership is approximately 200 Eye M.D.'s
